How to use Phiano

In this guide, you will learn the basic mechanics of using Phiano, your deliberate practice companion for studying sheet music.

Importing Sheet Music

Steps to Import a Page of Sheet Music from Photo Library:

  1. Tap the “Add” (+) button.
  2. Select a page of sheet music from your Photo Library.

Practice

Once you have imported one or more pages of sheet music into Phiano, you can start practicing.

  1. Tap the “Playing Now” button to enter Practice Mode.
  2. Practice the active piece.

Make an Effort

It’s okay whether you can play the piece smoothly from start to end or if you find it challenging right from the first measure.

Key Points:

  • Make an effort to play through the piece.
  • Identify which parts are difficult for you.

Extracting Segments

Breaking down challenging pieces into manageable segments is crucial for effective practice.

How to Extract a Segment:

  1. While in Practice Mode, tap in the middle of the screen.
  2. Tap the “Extract Segment” button.
  3. Use the Annotation Tool to outline the segment you need to focus on.
  4. Optionally, zoom in and adjust the canvas to focus on the highlighted segment.

When to Extract a Segment:

  • The piece feels overwhelming, and you’re struggling with its entirety.
  • Certain parts of the piece are problematic, causing you to make mistakes or slow down.

Self-Evaluation

Evaluate your performance using a three-tier grading system:

  • 🟩 Easy: You played the piece/segment flawlessly at the desired tempo.
  • 🟨 Difficult: You managed to play the piece/segment with some difficulty — perhaps requiring several attempts or playing slower than desired.
  • 🟥 Too Hard: You couldn’t play the piece/segment without mistakes.
